Multiple sclerosis (MS) is an immune-mediated disease, in which the body’s immune system exhibits an abnormal response to the central nervous system (or the brain, spinal cord, and optic nerves). The immune system attacks the fatty substance surrounding nerves, myelin, and also the nerve fibers – resulting in scar tissue and disrupted signals through the nervous system. MS is hypothesized to be triggered in genetically susceptible person by a combination of environmental factors.
While the exact cause of MS is unknown, there is evidence that shows a relationship with geography – showing a higher frequency of the disease in areas far from the equator. It’s thought that vitamin D plays an important role, as individuals living closer to the equator tend to have higher levels of naturally-produced vitamin D, which may help mitigate immune-mediated diseases like MS.
Common symptoms associated with MS include: speech impairment, lack of muscle coordination, numbness, blurred vision, fatigue, trouble waking, spams, and muscle weakness. Many MS patients often have to use wheelchairs as the disease progresses. Important features of a wheelchair for MS patients are: pressure reduction, comfort, and support.
BRODA Seating offers a variety of custom wheelchairs for MS patients, including: the Elite 785, 30 VT Semi Recliner, Mobility Pedal, and Midline Full Recliner. BRODA’s Comfort Tension Seating® helps reduce the pressure associated with sitting for long periods of time, and can help improve residents’ quality of life.
